Spanish Lessons

We currently have a a Native Spanish speaker from Barcelona delivering Modern Foreign Languages to all the pupils in our school. Each class has one lesson per week with Jordi Verdura Gomez who teaches them Spanish as part of our curriculum. This is the fourth year that the children have been having Spanish lessons and as a result we have developed many young linguists. Further up the school in Key Stage 2 the children have developed pen friend relationships with children from Colegio San Lorenzo in Spain which has required the children to converse in both English and Spanish.
In Bamford Primary School children learn Spanish from Reception to year 6. In Reception children have two sessions of 20 minutes a week and they learn basic greetings, numbers. colours, parts of the body and days of the week. They learn songs in Spanish and to listen traditional stories in Spanish.
When children move to KS1 we still reinforce speaking with greetings and they learn to express their likes and dislikes. At this stage children learn vocabulary about food, family and hobbies. They start to use Spanish language to read and write basic sentences.
During KS2 children are learning vocabulary and expressions, for example about shopping and food. They are able to use verbs and adjectives to describe their families, animals, foods etc and write and read more complex texts. In every lesson children spend 5 to 10 minutes practicing Spanish speaking. They also learn about Spanish speaking countries.
